Health and Diet

To start the journey toward change, we must begin with not only our mental attitude (the perspective we think, speak, and act from), but the physical body we inhabit. If the body we inhabit is out of balance, so will be our outlook. Think of the body you inhabit as a recipe. If it does not get all the required elements it needs, in the right amounts, in the right forms, it will not function properly. The body is made from the food we eat. The better the food is nutritionally, the better the body. In fact, if it does not get what it needs, it starts to degenerate. It may take a while, or you may have been born with a deficiency, but problems or symptoms will start showing up when what is needed is not available.

As hard as this may be to believe, or understand, things we call diseases, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, etc., are not diseases, but just symptoms of another problem. When the body is functioning at its optimal, toxins and waste products are transported out of the body quickly. As our body starts to break down, due to poor nutrition, so do the processes. The cells cannot get rid of the toxins and waste products fast enough, or not at all, especially when most of our diets are junk. Depending on where the weakest link is in your body processes, that will determine where, and what kind problems will show up first.

This problem with nutrition did not just start with you. Think about your parents and grandparents and on back. One of the things you did inherit from your parents, and/or whoever raised you ( sometimes they are not the same), are your eating habits. If your parents, or whoever raised you, did not get the proper nutrition in the meals they served, or were served, then neither did you. Before you were born, it was the same story. If your parents and grandparents did not get the proper nutrition, the nutrients necessary for the formation of the cells that eventually became your physical body, then you may suffer health problems related to these deficiencies. In such cases people are born with defective genes, birth defects, or even with what we call a disease or deficiency. Remember the recipe, if you do not have all the ingredients, in the right amounts, in the right forms, it will not come out right.

Something else to remember is that only a human body can make human tissue. The body will repair itself if given the proper nutrients (food, air, water, sunshine, rest, a kind and loving atmosphere, etc.). Another point, as mentioned before, is that food is more than what you put in your stomach. It is also what you feed your mind. Pay attention to what kind of thoughts you fill your mind with, what you read, watch, or listen to. The human mind works best when we are relaxed, at peace and happy. When we are upset, angry, or harboring hatred, malice, or revenge, we are pulled deeper and deeper into the ego based thinking.

The ego which creates stress and other poisonous emotions and attitudes, such as, hate, anger, violence, fear, jealousy, resentment, etc., impede or may even completely negate the immune system and healing powers of the body. Love and the attitudes it bestows, on the other hand, enhances them. If you truly have this Love, you will find out what is best for you. You will break old habit patterns and old ways of doing things that are wrong.

Here would be as good a place as any to quote the words attributed to Socrates: "The beginning of true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing."

We generally only know what we have been told or experienced, but most people acquire some of their behaviors (like eating habits) from either their parents or the people around them. Some people never even question most of the things they do including their dietary habits. To not question something that sustains us is a big part of our problem. We seem to have arbitrarily decided that this is the way food should be, led by our taste buds. Then once an industry, such as the food industry starts producing a product to make life "easier", (processed, canned, frozen, fast food) they certainly do not want you to change or question your eating habits. Where would their business go if you did? So companies and corporations tell you things, show you reports, usually paid for by them, that say their product (or something resembling their product) is good for you.

Another problem these days is obesity, for some people. Many people are desperate enough to lose their excess weight that they take drastic measures. Some even go so far as to have most of their stomach removed. Others take dangerous drugs, or go on fad diets that do them more harm than good. The human body responds to what you feed it. If you feed it junk, or food with a lot the nutrients missing, it will want you to keep eating. You will crave more food until your body gets the nutrients it needs. When you eat the whole nutritious food your body is looking for, a message is received in the brain that says you've had enough, and the hunger leaves. When the human body gets the nutrition it needs, in the form it needs, it will return to a balanced state. This means you will return to your ideal, or optimal weight. Every person is different, of course, so the time it takes will vary, but it will happen.

Another thing that will happen when proper nutrition is returned to the diet, is that the brain will start functioning better. Your thinking will become much clearer, and this you will need to see beyond the confines of our ego based world.

How, you might ask, do you find food with the proper nutrition? Did you take chemistry in high school? What happened when you heated a substance? Its chemical make up changed, its form changed, it lost a lot of the properties it originally had. The same thing happens when you cook your food.

Cooking your food destroys its ecological balance. According to research, it makes 50% of the protein unusable, destroys 60-70% of the vitamins, up to 96% of the vitamin B12, and 100% of many other essential nutrients. Cooking also destroys enzymes. Enzymes are living biochemical factors that activate and carry out all the biological processes in the body. When you cook food, it destroys the living factor, the natural energy force contained within all cells. Some of the processes that enzymes carry out are digestion, nerve impulses, detoxification, functioning of RNA/DNA, repair and healing of the body, and even the functioning of the mind. The natural enzymes in raw food, minimize the enzymes that need to be secreted by the body for digestion. The body's enzymes can then be used for the processes of detoxification, repair of body tissues that are breaking down, and overall healing. The eating of raw or living foods helps preserve our body's enzymes, thereby slowing the aging process. With the constant need for the pancreas to produce enzymes to digest cooked food, this could bring on pancreatic exhaustion, depleting our enzyme reserve with age.

A transition to a more natural diet would be a good start, but you may not be ready to go straight to a living food diet, as this would cause you to start a strong detoxification process that you might not be ready for.

It would be a good thing, however, to get as much fresh, raw organic fruits and vegetables into your diet as possible. For more on diet see the resources page.
